Explaining World Tragedy to Children (Information from an email sent to Miss Simms from the Public Education Network Weekly NewsBlast)

A six-year-old child has just seen video of real children being washed out to sea. A teen sits transfixed watching images of people clinging to trees, mothers wailing as they discover dead children in an endless line of unclaimed bodies, and babies crying hysterically for their mothers. At the dinner table your 5th grader asks, "Can anything like that happen to us, dad?" How is a parent to respond? What should you say? What should you do? How do you deal with your child’s fears without increasing them? Is it possible to reassure your child at a time when you, yourself, are horrified by the images of intense pain and grief you see in the hearts and on the faces of parents half way around the world? Chick Moorman and Thomas Haller provide useful tips for answering tough questions and honoring the feelings of children at: http://www.modernmom.com/content/1379   (This link will take you off the LCMS Website. LCMS STUDENT POLICIES

Lawton Chiles Middle School prides itself on the strong academic and safe environment we provide for students. For teachers and staff to continue this policy it is extremely important that we have the support of our parents. For this reason, we are asking parents to assist with our affective education plan. This plan includes:

All students must arrive on time to school. Students are considered late at 9:01 am.

All students must arrive on time to each and every class. When the late bell rings, students must be seated and prepared to begin class.

All students must be in uniform. This includes docker-style pants (khaki or black), knee-length skirts (khaki or black), polo shirt (forest green or white). Polo shirts are to be worn tucked in.  Our school uniform policy prohibits students from wearing jeans. Proper uniform combinations can be seen below.

The administrative staff will be conducting random "sweeps" for uniform violators as well as students tardy to school and class. These violators will be asked to serve detentions. Repeat violators will be dealt with according to the MDCPS Student Code of Conduct available in each students' agenda book.

Thank you parents for your continued support helping us provide a quality education for your child.
